Packaging Pollution

Unpacking the Problem

Multi-layer plastics (MLP) & plastic packagings

Hard-to-recycle plastics like MLP and packaging waste overwhelm landfills—innovative solutions are urgently needed.

Plastic packaging, including multi-layer plastics (MLP), poses one of the biggest challenges in waste management today. In Ontario alone, approximately 1.4 million tons of plastic packaging are incinerated or landfilled annually due to the lack of practical recycling solutions. These materials are designed for durability, with layers of different plastics fused together, making them extremely difficult to separate and recycle.

This leads to significant environmental and economic consequences. Non-recycled plastics not only take up valuable landfill space but also contribute to pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and resource depletion. Without intervention, these plastics persist for centuries, adding to the growing global plastic crisis.

Our Hard-to-Recycle Collection initiative tackles this problem head-on by creating practical, consumer-driven solutions. Through awareness campaigns, community events, and partnerships, we demonstrate that individual and collective efforts can make a measurable impact. By focusing on MLP and other problematic plastics, we aim to divert significant amounts of waste from landfills and repurpose materials into valuable resources.

Addressing hard-to-recycle plastics is crucial for reducing waste, conserving resources, and protecting the planet for future generations. Together, we can turn this challenge into an opportunity for lasting change.
